We hope you have all enjoyed your weekend. As we enter into this short week, there is a lot going on, so take a look at what’s happening below.
Spalding: Spalding homework will come home on Monday and should be completed every night using proper markings and with correct letter formation. There will be a test on Wednesday covering the 10 words students will learn this week. Make sure you continue reviewing phonograms 1-70 with your students at home.
Math: We will continue to focus on counting by 3’s and word problems. We will have a quiz covering multiplication of 2’s and 3’s on Wednesday. Please continue to have your scholars complete Xtramath five times a week.
History: We are finishing our Ancient Greece unit. This week we will review on Monday and have a unit assessment on Tuesday. Please review with your scholar using their blue journal to help prepare for the upcoming assessment.
Reading: We are finishing The Iliad this week and will be spending time in seminar. Students have be actively listening to the story in class and we are looking forward to having open discussions about this classic piece of literature. Please continue to devote approximately 20 minutes to reading with your scholar for homework.
Poetry: We will finish our Poetry recitations this week. Please make sure your students are prepared to recite the following poem.

Thoughts on the Iliad
As many of you know we have been reading the Children’s version of the Iliad in class. We have enjoyed teaching it and we know your students have enjoyed listening to it. As we finish up the story this week, we wanted to share a few of our thoughts with you.
We all love stories with great heroes. Stories filled with bravery, courage, persistence and victory. Reading the Iliad with second graders may seem absurd to some people, but our second graders are able to love and understand this heroic story just like we do. In this tale, we learn of two great warriors: Achilles of Greece and Hector of Troy. Though on opposing sides, they are both strong, proud and determined to win honor for themselves and their countries.
Both of them also have their weaknesses. Achilles is filled with rage that disables him from fighting his battles for weeks on end, Hector has merciless war techniques that leave both sides with many causalities. However, they also both have noble qualities that serve as lessons for our young students today.
This week, your students will engage with the question, “Who is more honorable, Achilles or Hector?” As they explore this question they will have to think about the different character qualities of both men. They will have to struggle with their strengths and their weaknesses. Ultimately they will have to ask the question, what is honor and how does one gain it. Does honor only come from achieving a goal or gaining victory? Or is honor a quality of the person who has integrity. Must we persist in doing what is good and right, even if it means, failure to truly become an honorable person?
As students discuss this question in their seminar this week, my hope is that it kindles within them a personal commitment to purse that which is honorable. We desire for all students to see themselves as capable of achieving such ends and being the type of people who strive to persist in the good through all that they do.
